A passenger plane with 16 people on board crashed today in the Irkutsk region of Siberia region of Russia.
Russia Today website quoted the Russian Emergencies Ministry as saying in a statement that "the accident occurred while the plane was carrying out a flight from the city of Irkutsk to Kazachenskoye," noting that the "410" plane, with 14 passengers and a crew of two people on board, made a sharp landing in a forested area. The ministry explained that preliminary data indicate that the stricken plane caught fire while trying to land at the local airport, and that a number of its passengers were able to leave it, while 11 others are still stuck inside, stressing that rescue teams rushed to the site of the accident.
The ministry concluded its statement by saying that on the instructions of the head of the Russian Investigative Committee, a criminal case was filed regarding the occurrence of the accident under an article related to the violation of security rules.
It is not yet clear whether the accident resulted in casualties.
