He gave no deadline as a West African mission called for elections on September 17 within six months.

In March 2020, the former president had a new Constitution adopted by referendum and invoked this change in the fundamental law to stand for re-election after two terms, despite months of blood-suppressed protest.
His re-election in October, vigorously contested by the opposition, was preceded and followed by numerous arrests.
