China today demanded that the United States stop using the slogan of democracy as a tool to oppress other countries and abandon its Cold War mentality.
"The United States should make a correct and objective assessment of itself, refrain from pretending to be the spokesperson for democracy, and should not use the democracy cause to oppress and interfere in other countries' affairs," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying was quoted by Xinhua as saying at a press conference.
The Chinese spokeswoman explained that democracy is measured by the extent to which it meets the expectations, needs and aspirations of peoples, noting that what Washington calls the "top of democracy" that it has drawn for itself "includes in its essence the lines of its ideology, and this will only lead to division and confrontation against the current of the times."
Hua expressed her hope that the United States would abandon the Cold War mentality and reject the wrong approach of "exclusive groups," and said, "China hopes that the United States can work with other countries based on the principles of mutual respect, justice, win-win cooperation in international relations and promote the common values of peace." development, democracy and freedom for all mankind.”
Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed his country's rejection of all forms of policies based on force and bullying.
