The SPD in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania won the state elections by a large margin.

When looking for a new government, Manuela Schwesig begins talks with the CDU.

Schwerin / Munich - The state election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was a show of force by the SPD.

39.6 percent of those eligible to vote voted for Manuela Schwesig's party.

After the election victory, talks are now beginning to form a new government.

First of all, the SPD wants to invite the CDU to exploratory talks in order to sound out the chances of continuing the governing coalition.

A schedule has not yet been set, but it should be explored quickly, said a party spokesman on Tuesday.

According to a decision by the SPD party committees, exploratory talks will then be held with the Left Party, the Greens and the FDP.

The exploratory team should present a result to the state executive "in October", the spokesman said.

The SPD was open-ended in all talks.

The CDU will be the first to be explored because it has been the coalition partner of the SPD so far.

However, the CDU leaves the state elections ailing.

Michael Sack was only able to secure 13.3 percent of the vote for his party.

The state chairman resigned as state chairman on Monday evening in response to the historically poor CDU election result.

He also renounced his mandate in the state parliament.

The party still wants to accept the offer of exploratory talks on the part of the SPD, as the provisional state chairman Eckhardt Rehberg announced.

Before that, however, a new board should be elected.

The AfD, with 16.7 percent, was also ahead of the CDU.

The SPD categorically ruled out talks with the alternative for Germany in advance.

According to the state constitution, the newly elected state parliament must meet within one month of the election.

Another four weeks later, a new prime minister has to be elected.
