Iran announced tonight (Saturday) that it had eliminated a senior member of a "terrorist organization" that planned to carry out terrorist attacks in the country and worked with the help of a foreign intelligence organization, the Iranian news agency Tassanim claimed.
According to the brief, the senior official was killed during an operation by the Iranian intelligence services during which "key elements" in the terrorist organization were also arrested.
The statement did not specify which foreign country had provided aid to the captured members of the cell, but claimed that it was one of the "enemies of the Iranian nation."
Meanwhile, Iran has sent an unusual threat to Azerbaijan, a neighbor to the north of the country, claiming that remarks made by senior officials in the country are helping Iran's enemies "especially the Zionist entity."
The remarks were made by Mahmoud Abbaszadeh, chairman of the Iranian parliament's intelligence and security committee.
"Therefore, senior Azerbaijan officials should be careful in their statements so that relations between the two countries are not harmed by childish statements," Abbaszadeh said.
The Iranian's remarks referred to statements by senior Azerbaijan officials, including President Eliyahu Aliyev, who criticized Tehran's regional conduct especially in light of its policies during the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
