The work of the first conference for the development of school sports was launched today under the slogan “Physical education is a mainstay in building society to prepare a physically, morally and intellectually strong generation,” which is held by the General Sports Federation in cooperation with the Ministries of Education and Higher Education, the National Union of Syrian Students, the Revolutionary Youth Union and the Vanguards of the Ba’ath Organization.

The opening ceremony, which was held at the Al-Assad National Library in Damascus, included the screening of a documentary film on the reality of school sports and the requirements for its success in various sports and its external participation during the previous years.

President of the General Sports Federation, Firas Mualla, stressed in a speech the importance of school sports and its role in supporting national sports, reviewing the obstacles that hinder the development of sports in schools, institutes and universities, most notably the lack of clear plans and strategies to build a generation that supports our clubs and teams, pointing out at the same time the need for this conference to come out with decisions Able to solve problems and move towards establishing a sport with specific goals.

Minister of Education Dr. Darem Tabbaa pointed out the importance of sports being a major part of the school curricula and the need for students to participate in it to increase their confidence, mental alertness and self-esteem as it helps teach different skills to students such as leadership, patience and endurance, noting the importance of the characteristics of school sports as it keeps the student in good health and fitness It helps him with positive guidance, development of cooperation, teamwork, social life, discipline and leadership skills, enabling them to perform better educationally and develop their self-esteem.

In a statement to SANA, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Bassam Ibrahim, said: “This conference comes within the framework of partnership between the Ministries of Higher Education and Education and the General Sports Federation, indicating that we will have a timetable through specialized technical committees with the aim of reviving sports of all kinds in our institutes and universities. At the same time, he indicated the importance of local and international university sports tournaments because they contribute to raising the rating of our universities.

The opening of the conference was preceded by a number of workshops that included a series of important themes that focused on sports education, curricula, school sports environment and specialized sports schools.

The conference will conclude tomorrow with workshops dealing with quality school sports, the role of the Sports Federation and its executive and technical committees in the governorates, in addition to ways to discover sports talent and ways to develop it.
