The beginning of the Greek revolution against the Ottoman Empire 200 years ago was celebrated with a large parade in Stuttgart on Saturday.

You could even see the Greek Presidential Guard, which, according to the organizers, appeared for the first time on European soil outside of Greece.

The "Evzones" in their white skirts are known to many holidaymakers in Greece - they parade, among other things, at the grave of the unknown soldier in front of the Greek Parliament in Athens.

Stuttgart - The approval for the appearance of the elite unit was given by the Greek President Ekaterina Sakellaropoulou.

According to the organizers, 5,000 people lined the streets to watch the parade.

The Germans were linked to the Hellenic Revolution 200 years ago.

At that time there was support from, among others, Stuttgart, where the "Aid Association for Greece" was founded, as the organizers of the parade announced.

The Greek Revolution had triggered a philhellenic movement with great mobilizing power throughout Germany.

Of the approximately 1,200 Philhellenes who traveled to Greece from the north and west of Europe from 1821 to support the struggle for freedom, by far the largest part came from Germany, according to the German embassy in Athens.
