"Does not break a glass ceiling": The first commander of a fin unit | Israel today

Captain Ofir Khoury is the first commander of the patrol to prevent the intrusion of hostile elements into Israeli territory - above and below the water.

The Sanfir unit in Haifa made a small history a few months ago, when Captain Ofir Khoury, the first woman in this position, was first appointed to the position of unit commander.

The unit, formerly known as the Port Security Unit, was established with the aim of securing the civilian and military ports in the State of Israel from threats on land, above and below water.

Unlike other units, the fin unit is divided into three arms, each of which stands on its own - in Haifa, Ashdod and Eilat.

Alongside the ports' maritime security against terrorists at sea, the fighters board merchant ships daily and scan them in order to remove fear of terrorist activity.

This is a particularly big threat, because terrorists are certainly capable of carrying terrorists, weapons and even bombs, in order to carry out an attack.

If the fighters do not detect such a threat in real time, there will be no one to stop the military equipment from entering Israeli territory and literally endangering life.

In addition, the submarine platform is located in Haifa, which also gives the threat a critical strategic touch.

Khoury, a resident of Moshav Amnon, completed a seamanship course in 2018 and in her most recent role was also the commander of a bee ship, a unit commander on a vessel among dozens of male officers.

About six months ago, it took command of a fin unit, which is a kind of navy patrol and its role is to protect the vessel as well as perform other special functions in the area.

"The unit believes in the ongoing security of the northern border and ports. This means preventing the intrusion of hostile elements in the port and specific point missions on the northern border," reveals Khoury Tefah and hides Tefahim. The fin unit in Haifa operates as part of Party 914, which protects the northern region at sea. "We are on standby 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and perform dedicated missions on top of 'Wasps.'"

The unit commander is not thrilled by the fact that she is the first in her role.

"I believe less in the expression of a glass ceiling. In my six years in the Navy I have never felt that there is anything that prevents me from doing something. In the path I have chosen I do not feel there is any restriction because I am a woman. I understand why it's dealt with, but I have a dream that we will not have to deal with it at all - that the combination can simply be something legitimate. I feel in the end that the goals have been achieved. "That's not a big deal."

Fin, says Khoury, is a small unit that performs particularly important tasks.
