Sexual abuse in the Church: abroad, scandals, studies and blind spots

Only six countries in the world have completed such national-level research on this topic: Ireland, the United States, Australia, Germany, France and Poland.


The idea to launch a fundamental historical study on the extent and causes of sexual assault in the Church of France in November 2018 was inspired by four similar studies in other countries.

Studies comparable in their purpose but different in their method, sometimes carried out by state entities, such as in Ireland or Australia, sometimes by Catholic university ecclesial entities.

Only six countries in the world have carried out such national-level research on this topic: Ireland, the United States, Australia, Germany, France and Poland.

It was the Irish, a country strongly affected by this phenomenon, who started.

A first national report conducted by judge Sean Ryan mentions, in May 2009, more than 2000 sexual assaults committed by religious or priests in youth institutions since 1936. As for the Murphy report, published the same year on the diocese of Dublin alone , he assures that 321 young people were attacked by 46 priests
