Lagos-Sana

The Nigerian authorities announced today that 14 people were killed and dozens missing in the collapse of a building under construction in Lagos, the economic capital of Nigeria, yesterday.

And the Associated Press quoted local authorities as saying that “14 people were killed and dozens were missing in the collapse of the apartment building,” adding that “9 people who were stuck in the rubble were rescued.”

Officials indicated that rescue and search operations for the missing were underway. They pointed out that the owner of the 21-storey building in Ikoyi city, where it was licensed for 15 floors and not 21, was arrested, and it is likely that the collapse was caused by excessive weight.

According to the residents and workers at the site, dozens of people were inside the building at the time of the collapse. One construction worker who managed to escape and survived confirmed that more than 100 people are still trapped among the ruins of the destroyed building.

Ikoyi is one of the most distinguished residential and commercial areas in Lagos, the economic capital, with a population of about 20 million people.
