At least two journalists were killed in Mexico this week, Mexican authorities reported.

Freddy López Arévalo, a radio host and correspondent, was shot dead by a man as he arrived at his home in San Cristóbal de las Casas, in the southern state of Chiapas, the Chiapas State Attorney General's Office reported on Friday in a statement.

"The Office of the Attorney General of the State regrets this reprehensible fact and reaffirms its commitment to continue with the investigations until the facts are clarified, to guarantee the rule of law and reiterates that no criminal conduct will go unpunished," the statement said.

The governor of Chiapas, Rutilio Escandón, also condemned the murder of López Arévalo.

"I strongly condemn the cowardly murder of journalist Fredy López Arévalo. No crime will go unpunished, the investigations are ongoing. My solidarity with his family and friends," Escandón tweeted.

On Sunday, photojournalist Alfredo Cardoso died two days after he was hospitalized from gunshot wounds in Acapulco, the Guerrero State Attorney General's Office reported in a statement.

"Witness interviews are being collected to provide data and elements to locate and arrest him or those who are likely responsible for the crime," said the Prosecutor's Office in a statement.

"The State Attorney General's Office will promptly follow up on the investigation and will remain coordinated with the Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists."

From 2000 to the present, 145 journalists have been attacked and murdered in Mexico, according to figures from the defense group for freedom of expression "Article 19".

Seven of those journalists were killed in 2021.

The non-profit organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reports that Mexico remains one of the most dangerous and deadly countries in the world for the media.

Despite recent advances, the country continues to sink into a spiral of violence and impunity, according to RSF.
