Policemen from Lev Tel Aviv station accompanied Holocaust survivor Gila Zaga for years.
Yesterday, after she passed away, the police officers called in a post they published to the public to come and accompany her on her final journey.
"We owe your help and assistance. Today, with great sorrow, Holocaust survivor Gilberta (Gila) Zaga passed away, whom we have been accompanying for the past few years," the post said.
"Gilberta has left only one son and no extended family. In order to honor her on her last journey and hold a proper funeral for her I ask for your help. Anyone who can come today and attend the funeral will be very happy for the son and the small family. The police accompanied Zaga and her son for a decade as part of a project to adopt Holocaust survivors.
Menashe Mansour, the commander of the community policing at Lev Tel Aviv station, said: "We wrote the post so that there will be a response. She is an almost childless woman. The intention is for police officers and people from the general public to come to the funeral and have a dignified funeral."
"I have been accompanying Gila and her son, who is on the autistic continuum, for about ten years, since we took on the 'Adopt Holocaust Survivors' project," said David Dekel, a tourism farmer at Lev Tel Aviv station.
"We accompanied them in conversations, events, holidays and in all sorts of situations that help them both mentally and in terms of bureaucracy."

David added: "This is a mother and son who lived alone in Tel Aviv. 4 years ago her health deteriorated and she was hospitalized in a nursing home in Bnei Brak. In the last month her condition has really deteriorated and last night she passed away. I am constantly accompanying her son and I will continue to accompany him."
