The government of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan, where hundreds of migrants stranded at the border between Belarus and Poland come from, said on Wednesday (November 10th) that it wanted to tackle the

economic and social

"

causes

" that push the Kurds to emigrate.

Concern is growing around the fate of more than 2,000 migrants, especially Iraqi Kurds, who are stranded on the border between Belarus and Poland, a member country of the European Union.

Warsaw warns of an upsurge in illegal crossing attempts and pushes migrants back to Belarus.

Among the factors contributing to push the Kurds to leave their lands are "

the regional security problems and the effects of the world recession

", affirmed in a statement Jotiar Adil, the spokesman of the government of Iraqi Kurdistan (north).

Creation of "

120,000 new jobs

"

Questioned by AFP, several Kurdish candidates for migration to Europe cited the lack of economic prospects, but also the lack of stability to motivate their decision. Iraqi Kurdistan boasts of its stability and its strategic geographical position to attract foreign investors, but the region is hit by the economic crisis and regularly singled out by human rights defenders. The region has been held for decades by two parties, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Democratic Party of Kurdistan (PDK).

The government and its Prime Minister Masrour Barzani (PDK) intend, according to Jotiar Adil, "to

tackle the root causes of the phenomenon

" of emigration.

Boasting the creation of "

120,000 new jobs

", the regional government intends to "

create new professional prospects for young people and improve the quality of life for all

".

But the government of the autonomous region is scratching the central power in Baghdad by calling on it to "

allocate to the Kurdistan region its share of the budget (federal, editor's note) on time and not to withhold the salaries

" of civil servants.

This last subject is a recurring bone of contention between Baghdad and Kurdistan.
