Former soccer player Pelé announced on Thursday of his last chemotherapy session this year for the treatment of a colon tumor, and said he will remain hospitalized for a series of tests.

"Friends, since September 30, when I left the hospital, you know that I have been doing small chemotherapy sessions as part of my treatment. On Wednesday, a medical bulletin released by Albert Einstein Hospital said the 81-year-old former player had been hospitalized for further treatment of the tumor identified in September.

The colon tumor of Pelé, three times world champion with the Brazilian team in 1958, 1962 and 1970, was detected during routine examinations.

At the time, the former player said he would undergo chemotherapy.

Pelé, considered by many to be the best footballer in history, underwent surgery to remove the tumor in September and was discharged from the hospital at the end of the same month.
