Speeding was the main cause of the accident registered on Thursday in Chiapas, Mexico, in which at least 55 people died, according to a joint statement by the Chiapas Prosecutor's Office and the Attorney General's Office issued this Friday.

The authorities assure that some 150 people, 98% of Guatemalan origin, were affected.

The driver of the tractor-trailer fled moments after hitting a pedestrian bridge on the Chiapa de Corzo-Tuxtla Gutiérrez highway, 12 kilometers from the capital, the statement said.

"The Human Rights staff of the FGR (Attorney General's Office) is already providing psychological support to minors and all victims of crime," the statement said.
