Joe Biden tried to reassure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday by promising him the support of the United States in the face of the threat of Russian invasion.
During a long telephone conversation, the American president repeated to his Ukrainian counterpart that the United States
"would respond with strong economic sanctions in the event of further
Russian
military intervention"
, according to the White House press release.
Biden reaffirmed
"the unwavering commitment of the United States to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine"
.
He also promised in Kiev that the United States and its allies remain committed to the principle that
"no decision or discussion on Ukraine is taken without Ukraine"
.
Military equipment
A video interview between Biden and Putin on Tuesday had raised some concerns in Kiev.
In particular that of seeing the two great powers come to an understanding among themselves without consulting Ukraine.
