The national government declared a state of catastrophe due to the fire that occurred in the municipality of Castro in Chiloé, in southern Chile.

The Minister of the Interior of Chile, Rodrigo Delgado, reported this Friday that a communal state catastrophe was declared in the municipality of Castro with the aim of delivering aid as soon as possible to those affected by a large fire.

According to the municipality authorities, 145 families are affected by a large fire that occurred on Thursday in the Castro Alto sector of the capital of the province of Chiloé.

The Chilean National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) reported this Thursday that the “Camilo Henríquez” forest fire, which covers an area of ​​approximately 1.5 hectares in the Castro commune, located in the Chiloé archipelago, in the south of the country, It left 80 homes destroyed, 200 people affected and 340 evacuated.

In a statement, Conaf said that the affected people would be housed in the Municipal Sports Center.

The mayor of Castro, Juan Eduardo Vera, confirmed that at least a hundred homes have been affected by the flames due to the rapid advance of the fire, despite the work of firefighters from three communes and Conaf brigades.

The National Emergency Office of the Ministry of the Interior and the authorities of the area decreed a red alert due to the rapid spread of the flames and in attention to the houses that are being affected.

Likewise, the entire Province of Chiloé is on a yellow alert since this Thursday.
