At least 50 people were killed in a powerful tornado that hit the southern US state of Kentucky, according to state Governor Andy Beer.

And the French press agency quoted Pierre as saying in a press conference today that the hurricane caused damage to many districts of the state due to the accompanying winds that exceeded 300 kilometers per hour, describing the hurricane as the most severe in the history of the state of Kentucky, stressing that before midnight a state of emergency was declared.

A series of tornadoes hit several states in the southern United States, including the US state of Arkansas, which caused the hurricane to kill two people, injuring five and trapping at least 20 others in a nursing home in the city, according to local officials in the state.

The US National Weather Service earlier issued tornado warnings for areas of several states, including Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri and Illinois.
