(ANSAMed) - BEIRUT, DECEMBER 10 - About 200,000 Lebanese have fled their country due to economic collapse in the last two years.

This was reported by the Information International research center based in Beirut.

According to the latest report of the research center, alongside a type of migration of Lebanese, Syrian and Iraqi refugees from the Mediterranean shores of Lebanon to Cyprus, since the autumn of 2019 there have been about 160 thousand departures of middle-class Lebanese, emigrated to destinations considered less common, such as Turkey, Georgia and Armenia.

Lebanon is in financial default, hit by the bankruptcy of the banking system and the worst currency crisis in decades.

The shortage of essential goods and services in the country has increased and the local lira continues to lose its value against the US dollar.

The UN states that over 75% of the resident population lives below the poverty line.
