A recent study found that antibiotics are now a first-line treatment for most people with appendicitis.
According to the New England Journal of Medicine, a study conducted by researchers from the American College of Surgeons showed that antibiotics are the appropriate treatment for many patients suffering from appendicitis, according to the final results of a comparison between antibiotic drugs and appendectomy and modern guidelines for its treatment.
Antibiotics are the appropriate treatment for many, but not likely all, patients with appendicitis, said the lead researcher and associate professor of surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine, adding that there are advantages and disadvantages to each treatment.
It is important for surgeons and patients to discuss the pros and cons of both surgery and antibiotics in determining the best treatment for that person in a timely manner.
