Four people were killed and others are missing when a building collapsed on the Italian island of Sicily today.
Reuters news agency quoted the head of the local fire brigade as saying that a powerful gas explosion caused the collapse of a building in the city of Ravanosa on the island, killing at least four people and missing five others, while two women were found alive under the rubble.
Firefighters are still digging through the rubble to search for the missing.
Television pictures showed a huge pile of rubble, wooden beams on the ground and charred and damaged buildings nearby.
"The gas may have accumulated in a hole and this pocket of gas may have exploded due to an accidental detonator such as a car, an elevator or an electrical machine," the head of the fire brigade said.
