Palestinian flags and candies: Sheikh Raed Salah released from prison, hundreds greeted | Israel today

Sheikh Raed Saleh, the head of the northern faction of the Islamic Movement, was released this morning (Monday), after his release from prison was delayed by several hours. 

Saleh, who was received on the way out of Megiddo Prison by his deputy, Kamal Khatib, also received support from hundreds of Westerners in Israel who waved the movement's flags.

Afterwards, the two were put in their car, which left in a long convoy for the city of Umm al-Fahm, where a large rally of support awaited it.  

Upon entering the city, the sheikh was greeted with signs of support spread along the main streets and with praise slogans such as "Sheikh al-Aqsa" - as Salah is known by the masses in the city, alongside Palestinian flags.

In July 2020, the appeal of the head of the northern faction of the Islamic Movement in the Haifa District Court was rejected, and he was sent to 28 months in prison for incitement to terrorism and illegal membership in the organization, following rallies held after the attack by young residents of Umm al-Fahm on the Temple Mount. Where two policemen were killed. 

The judges wrote in their decision: "This case is not a restriction of freedom of expression but a prevention and prohibition of incitement and support for a terrorist organization. The defendant, like everyone else, has the right to criticize the government and its leader. And to support illegal acts of terrorism. "

It is further written: "The appellant who is a leader in his community is aware that the public looking at him learns from his statements, as well as from his silence, about his support for a criminal act.
