A peak in coronary heart disease was recorded today (Wednesday) in the UK and South Africa amid the spread of variant Omicron.

78,610 verified people have been diagnosed in the last day in the kingdom, while authorities warn that the new strain is the "most significant threat" to public health.

In South Africa, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases reported 26,976 new cases of the virus, compared to the previous record of 26,485 in early July, when the Delta strain spread.

The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention has warned that vaccines alone will not stop the variant.

"There is not enough time to close the gap in the rate of immunization," said center director Andre Amon.

"Significant steps must be taken urgently to reduce the rate of infection and alleviate the burden on health systems."

In the United States, the death toll from the outbreak has risen to more than 800,000.

The last hundred thousand victims have died in the last 11 weeks, a faster pace than any other stage in the epidemic except for the severe wave last winter.

The dismal milestone comes after the United States registered 50 million cases of the virus on Monday this week.
