Damascus-SANA
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Syrian Society for Exploration and Documentation, Dr. Mahmoud Kifri, revealed that with the monitoring of a group of Mediterranean hermit seals at Samra Bay in Lattakia countryside, a new indication of the presence of marine life in it, which prompts efforts to declare this beach facing it as a marine reserve.
Kifri said in a statement to the SANA delegate that during the past two days, between 8 to 9 Mediterranean hermit seals were seen by the people of Samra, which is the first time that this number was monitored after the association documented the appearance of this seal in Qandil Valley in 2013.
The head of the association indicated that the monitoring of 9 seals in the Samra beach indicates the presence of an area close to it in which this type of animal is inhabited, indicating that a mission will be sent from the association to monitor and document the area during the coming period.
He pointed out that the monitoring of these types of creatures, in addition to the discovery of a submerged sea cave last summer in Samra Beach, is evidence of the return of natural marine life to our shores according to environmental safety indicators and the recovery of coastal areas in our environment, including Samra and Kasab.
Kifri noted that these discoveries are an added value to the Samra Beach, and said, "What we seek is to declare this beach a marine reserve that is entered and visited according to certain controls in order to ensure the environmental safety of the natural marine life in it in general."
