The coalition dropped tonight (Wednesday) the "Nir Barkat Law" initiated by MK David Amsalem (Likud), but on the other hand approved an identical bill by MK Sharan Hashakel (New Hope) from the coalition, and it passed a preliminary reading.
Amsalem's proposal was rejected by a majority of 58 against and 16 in favor of 16, while the same wording of the mind passed by a majority of 64, compared with 17 against.
The coalition originally supported a law initiated by MK Amsalem from the opposition, which limits the amount of donations raised by elected officials and family members for political activity to one hundred thousand shekels a year. Before the vote on the law, the chairman of Yesh Atid, Yair Lapid, filed an appeal with Justice Minister Gideon Saar over the decision of the Ministerial Committee on Legislation to support his law, in which he wrote that "Amsalem leads violent and offensive discourse in the Knesset plenum and shames the status of Knesset and plenum members."
Thirteen MKs in the Likud supported Amsalem's law, which is considered a law directed against MK Nir Barkat, who intends to run for the Likud presidency in the future, and has to date invested heavily in consultants, advertising and campaigns in Likud primaries, and even leads in most future polls.
The MKs who opposed are Israel Katz, Yariv Levin, Ofir Katz, Amir Ohana, Miri Regev, Yuval Steinitz, Yoav Galant. .
