Spain has exceeded this Wednesday the ten million positive cases of covid-19 registered since the start of the pandemic, after adding 77,873 infected to the official count.
Specifically, the country has reported 10,039,126 infections since January 31, 2020, when the first positive case in the country was detected.
With this figure, Spain ranks as the third country in the European Union with the highest number of infected behind France, where 19,140,730 infected have been recorded, and after Italy, with 10,983,116 cases, according to data from the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
So far in 2022, Spain has added four million infected to its official record, at an average rate of one million per week.
This rapid rise is due to the circulation of the omicron variant, which has plunged the country into a sixth wave of infections and has ended up imposing itself as the dominant variant, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health.
However, the head of this ministry, Carolina Darias, assured in previous days that the country has already bent the curve of this wave.
Affirmation ratified by the latest data offered by the agency, where it is shown how the cumulative incidence of positive cases at 14 days has decreased by 572 points, going from 3,267 cases per one hundred thousand inhabitants on Tuesday, January 25, to 2,694 this Tuesday, January 1 February.
