Early detection of rectal and lung cancer in an awareness symposium in Homs

Homs, SANA- The Syrian Cancer Society held a scientific and educational symposium in Homs entitled “The Risks of Cancer.”

The Syrian Cancer Society in Homs held a scientific and educational symposium entitled “The Risks of Cancer and Early Detection of Rectal and Lung Cancer” at the City’s Cultural Center in conjunction with the Arab Gulf Cancer Awareness Week.

Dr. Fahd Shribati, head of the Syrian Scientific and Specialized Associations in the Syrian Doctors Syndicate, pointed out the role of surgery in treating rectal cancer and ways to make treatment successful after early detection of the disease.

For his part, Dr. Ihab Al-Naqari, Director of Al-Biruni University Hospital and President of the Syrian Breast Diseases Society, pointed out that the National Cancer Committee in Syria, since its establishment in 2019, has completed the tumor map in Syria, indicating the importance of fruitful cooperation between the association and the rest of the medical associations and societies under the umbrella of the Doctors Syndicate in Qatar with the aim of early detection About cancer and raising awareness.

In turn, Dr. Maha Manashi, head of the Syrian Association of Oncologists and member of the National Committee for Cancer Control, explained that in Syria we have about 18,000 cases annually, and 60 percent of them are treated in Al-Biruni University Hospital, pointing out that the association puts its experiences and programs in the service of society and in partnership with everyone to deliver a culture of awareness and early detection about cancer.

The symposium included an introductory film about the activities and initiatives of the Syrian Association for Cancer Control in Homs.

It also included a number of medical awareness lectures, where Dr. Violet Deeb, a specialist in hematology and oncology, head of the scientific committee of the Syrian Society for Cancer Control in Homs, pointed out the importance of early detection of colorectal cancer, as this type is characterized by passing through a very early stage before it turns into cancer and can be cured from During specific treatment after early detection.

Dr. Ahmed Zahi Al-Shawaf, head of the Syrian Cancer Society in Homs, indicated that cancer causes the death of about 6 million people around the world annually, 70 percent of whom are in developing countries, and the diagnosis is delayed.

For his part, Dr. Muhammad Al-Awak, Head of the Breast Cancer Division at Al-Biruni Hospital, explained that there are several approved methods for early detection of cancer by conducting periodic examinations through gastroscopy on a regular basis, especially for high-risk patients who have a family history or environmental and societal habits that predispose to the occurrence of cancer.

Dr. Tariq Al-Droubi, a specialist in thoracic surgery, indicated that 80 percent of lung cancer is related to smoking, which is the most deadly among other types, pointing out that only 35 percent of tumor cases are operable, while the vast rest are neither operable nor curable.

The symposium was attended by Dr. Azzam Al-Najjar, head of the branch of the Doctors Syndicate in Homs, and the Director of the Homs Health Department, Muslim Al-Atassi.
