Two days was spent looking for a hiker in the Herzogstand – with a tragic outcome.

It was a difficult mission for the almost 30 rescue workers on site.

Kochel am See/Walchensee

– As reported, the missing 23-year-old from Bamberg was found dead in Deiningsbach on Friday afternoon.

How exactly the accident happened is being investigated by the Alpine Police Task Force.

The woman probably strayed from the path, got into rough terrain and fell.

There is currently a lot of snow on the mountain, the avalanche risk is high.

When the mountain rescue services from Kochel, Benediktbeuern and Penzberg, together with the police and a helicopter, started the search on Thursday evening, the rescue workers also had to adapt to these conditions.

On Friday, six ground troops and two helicopters were in the area, and there were also coordination forces in the valley.

"In such a situation, local knowledge of the terrain on the mountain is very important for the rescue workers," says Richard Huber, temporary head of operations at the Kochel mountain rescue service, about risk management.

All helpers were equipped with avalanche equipment.

On the mountain, the location coordinates are passed on to the helicopter crew so that the team in the air can use a thermal imaging camera to check certain places that cannot be accessed in the terrain for reasons of danger.

The tragic accident affects the rescuers

A helicopter team discovered the casualty in Deiningsbach.

Members of the police's alpine task force salvaged the dead from the rough terrain.

A total of eleven police officers and 17 mountain rescue service members were involved in the search.

The accident is also close to the rescue workers, says Huber.

A crisis telephone is available for the helpers at the mountain rescue service.

Another accident on Friday afternoon - mountain rescue warns: avalanche risk is high

Another accident occurred at the Herzogstand during the large-scale operation on Friday afternoon.

A woman slipped on the hiking trail.

A third helicopter was requested to take them down to the valley after first aid.

In view of the adverse weather conditions, you should definitely weigh up the risk before a tour in the mountains and heed the avalanche warnings, says Huber.

There is currently an increased risk of wet snow avalanches.

The meadow underground on the south side of Herzogstand appears “like a slide” when the sun is shining.
