"That they stop seeing us as a land of conquest," argues the Mexican president to the "surprise" of the Spanish government. And the Spaniards? "They are a hard-working people, good, extraordinary," he says.

The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, affirmed this Wednesday in his morning press conference that he plans to take a "pause" in relations with Spain to prevent him from "ceasing to see" Mexico "as a land of conquest": "We do not want rob us."

"We want to have good relations with all the governments of the world, but we don't want them to rob us,

just as the Spaniards don't want them to be robbed from any country. And they do well. Well, neither do we," the president assured.

“It is better to give us some time, a pause, maybe when the government changes, relations will already be established.

I wish that when I am not here they are not the same as they were before, ”she concluded.

The Mexican president said that the idea of the "pause" was just a "comment", during his morning conference on February 9.

AMLO (as the name of the president is popularly abbreviated) denounced that the relations between the previous governments and the Spanish companies were

"a conspiracy from above", an economic and political promiscuity,

at the top of the Governments of Mexico and Spain, but like for three six-year terms in a row.”

He specifically referred to the dynamics between former presidents Vicente Fox and Iberdrola;

Felipe Calderón with Repsol;

and Enrique Peña Nieto with OHL.

"They were self-conscious, fascinated with the monarchy," he added.

When asked whether or not a formal request will be made to the Spanish Government regarding this "pause" that he proposed, the Mexican president assured that it would not and that it was only a "comment".

“No, no, no, you can't make [a request].

imagine!

The internationalists, if they question me because I'm from Tepetitán... It implies a comment, can I no longer make any comment?

It is a talk here, a conversation, so that people have all the elements, they have to socialize, we have to guarantee the people's right to information”, she added.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs avoided responding to AMLO's "comment", but, according to diplomatic sources quoted by the newspaper El País, it conveyed its "surprise" and described these statements as "inexplicable" because they consider that relations between the two countries are in a normalization point.

In 2019, López Obrador sent the Spanish king, Felipe VI, a letter demanding that they apologize for the abuses committed during the centuries of conquest and genocide in the American continent.

Another point of tension between the two countries was the five-month delay by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in giving the go-ahead to the ambassador, Quirino Ordaz, former governor of Sinaloa, who was finally confirmed in January.

In his statements, AMLO emphasized that his remarks are against the companies and not against the Spaniards.

“It is a hard-working town, good, extraordinary,” he added.
