"We want to have good relations with all the governments of the world, but we don't want them to rob us,

When asked whether or not a formal request will be made to the Spanish Government regarding this "pause" that he proposed, the Mexican president assured that it would not and that it was only a "comment".

In 2019, López Obrador sent the Spanish king, Felipe VI, a letter demanding that they apologize for the abuses committed during the centuries of conquest and genocide in the American continent.
Another point of tension between the two countries was the five-month delay by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in giving the go-ahead to the ambassador, Quirino Ordaz, former governor of Sinaloa, who was finally confirmed in January.
