The former interim president of Bolivia Jeanine Áñez declared herself on a hunger strike this Wednesday, just one day before the start of the second trial against her related to the constitutional succession during the 2019 political crisis in the country.

"I make one of the hardest decisions of my life. Today I am going on a hunger strike, I am desperate to see a country without justice or law," says the former president in a handwritten letter that her press team shared with CNN.

Áñez hopes that this action "will help the international community understand that justice in Bolivia belongs to Evo Morales and Luis Arce."

CNN contacted the General Directorate of the Penitentiary Regime to find out its version and is still waiting for a response.

Speaking to state-run Bolivia TV in January, Justice Minister Iván Lima said the Arce government was "respectful of due process and the independence of judges."

Áñez faces a trial this Thursday in the framework of the case called "Coup d'etat II", in which she is accused of the alleged crimes of breach of duties and resolutions contrary to the Constitution and the laws, related to constitutional succession after the resignation of Evo Morales to the presidency.

In another case, called "Coup d'etat I", Áñez is accused of the alleged crimes of sedition, conspiracy and terrorism during the political and social crisis that followed the 2019 elections.

Áñez's lawyer, Luis Guillén, told CNN that the Prosecutor's Office will start the trial without a ruling from the Constitutional Court on the legality of the case and ignoring the path of a trial of responsibilities established in the Constitution for former presidents.
