Presidential documents recovered at Trump residence in Florida 1:45
(CNN) --
The US National Archives has asked the Justice Department to investigate former President Donald Trump's handling of White House records, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The source said the Archives are seeking a review of whether Trump violated the Presidential Records Act.
It is unclear whether the Archives will launch a formal investigation.
The vast majority of references to the Department of Justice do not end up provoking a formal investigation.
The Washington Post
was the first outlet to report on the request.
In a statement on Wednesday, the National Archives said: "We do not comment on potential or ongoing investigations."
The request came after recent revelations that the National Archives had to retrieve 15 boxes of records that had ended up with Trump at Mar-a-Lago and other documents turned over to the Archives were vandalized and had to be put back together.
The Justice Department declined to comment.
