Rice from Bavaria, detergent from Breitbrunn or tahin from Kerschlach, offered to fill in your own containers: Birgit Grosse (56) and Sibylle Ulman (53) open the first unpackaged shop on the east bank in Herrsching with "Unpacked am Ammersee - sustainable, fair, regional". .

Herrsching – Birgit Grosse (56) had her first shopping experience in a bulky store three years ago – and that gave the impetus to open her own store in her home town of Herrsching.

It was then that the mother of a grown son realized for the first time that she was throwing away two yellow bags a week.

And she questioned the necessity of the trucks with goods from all over the world, which she overtook on the way to Munich Airport.

The pandemic gave her the last push towards independence.

"The short-time work during Corona threw me off the rut," she says.

Last summer, Lufthansa offered her a golden handshake, which made her say goodbye to her day-to-day work as a crew planner.

"If not now, then never," said Sibylle Ulman (53).

The mother of two gave up her job as a civil engineer to be able to start this sustainable project with her girlfriend.

From then on, the two of them collected ideas in various bulk shops and looked for a suitable space.

Then the travel agency moved out of Bahnhofstraße 26 next to the Hofpfisterei – and the premises were literally tailored to the needs of the shop.

"We complement each other perfectly," both say.

Birgit Grosse is the creative part of the alliance, while Sibylle Ulman's strengths lie in the structure.

The civil engineer was predestined to instruct the craftsmen with the details of converting the 70 square meter shop area and the 40 square meter basement.

They will open next Tuesday, February 15th.

Sustainability and ecology played just as important a role in the choice of furnishings as in the selection of the range.

The shelves, for example, are made of Bavarian spruce and embedded with sustainable oils.

In the middle of the room, customers can make themselves comfortable on a green sofa with an espresso or cappuccino from the Herrsching roastery.

The women in Herrsching attach great importance to buying goods from organic farms in the area whenever possible.

"I was really happy when I found rice and quinoa grown in Bavaria," says Sibylle Ulman.

Organic cereals such as spelled, wheat or rye are filled into containers you have brought with you with the shovel – you can also grind them yourself if you wish.

There are also types of muesli, organic oatmeal or detergent that you can fill up or mix yourself.

The display also includes exotic items such as amaranth and spelled noodles or pumpkin seed linguine.

If you don't have anything to fill with you, you can get a washed-out pickle jar, pour the goods into paper bags or buy a container made of sugar cane.

"The advantage of our shop is that you can also buy small quantities," emphasizes Brigitte Grosse.

150 grams of pasta or 100 grams of flour are just as possible as a handful of raisins.

Toothbrushes made from FSC-free wood or fair trade tea towels are also available.

"We pay attention to fair production."

With the unpackaged shop, the friends are fulfilling a dream - and are grateful to be "doing something meaningful in this new phase of life".

And by the way, the former crew planner Grosse is returning to her roots, because she practically grew up in her parents' watch shop in Herrsching.

“We look forward to introducing people to the wonderful world of organic, unpackaged food.” The store is open Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
