Latakia-SANA

The Ministry of Water Resources is following up the implementation of a number of projects to support water resources in Lattakia Governorate, whether related to increasing the quantity of drinking water or introducing alternative energies in operating wells, as well as constructing dams to raise the stored water capacity.

The Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Tammam Raad, was briefed today on the progress of work at the water purification plant for Lake Tishreen 16 Dam, Bradoun Dam and Well Al Maran in Qardaha countryside.

Most of the excavation works were completed in the water purification plant of the Tishreen 16 dam lake for drinking purposes, which is implemented by the Russian Food Stroy Company, with the start of reinforced concrete works for sand filters and the base of the intakes to secure about 85,000 cubic meters of drinking water for the city of Lattakia and its countryside.

Minister Raad confirmed in a press statement that the station project, whose cost exceeds 170 billion pounds and has a capacity of one cubic meter per second, will contribute to supporting the daily supply of drinking water in Lattakia and the population centers on the route of the line.

Minister Raad referred to the development of implementation paths for the existing projects, including the completion of the Bradon Dam with its storage capacity of 140 million cubic meters to support the water supply of Lake Tishreen 16 and agricultural uses.

Minister Raad pointed out that the ministry developed a plan last year to operate 94 wells across Syria through alternative energy, and allocated at least 10 percent of the water institutions' budget to convert to solar energy on wells.

In turn, the project manager of the Tishreen 16 Lake Water Purification Plant, Engineer Mamdouh Rajab, indicated that the project is being implemented within the specified time period and is expected to be put into service at the end of this year, which will contribute to solving the drinking water problem in Lattakia and a number of villages in the northern countryside, including Al-Kanjara, Karsana and Al-Maghrit.

Minister Raad was also briefed on the maintenance work of technical facilities in the Tishreen 16 Dam, which has a storage volume of 204 million cubic meters out of a total natural storage of 210 million cubic metres.

The tour included reviewing the progress of work in the Bradon Dam in the northern countryside of Lattakia, which stores about 140 million cubic meters and, when completed, contributes to supporting Lake Tishreen 16.

The Director of Water Resources in Lattakia, Engineer Firas Haider, indicated that the storage rate in the Tishreen 16 Dam reached 96 percent, which is an indication of the implementation of a good agricultural season, explaining that the work in the Bradoun Dam is proceeding at a high pace despite the suspension of some stages of work during the rainy season.

In turn, the director of the Military Housing Branch 2, the implementing agency of the Bradun Dam, Engineer Muhammad Amin Ali, confirmed that the branch is working at a high pace to complete the implementation of the dam’s work and has been involved in a large number of mechanisms, indicating that due to the cessation of backfilling works in the rainy season, additional work fronts have been opened, where rock backfilling is done on both sides.
