Meltem Kaptan initially thought differently about her Silver Bear-winning role in the drama Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush.

"To be honest, I didn't want to make Rabiye Kurnaz so funny," said Kaptan on Wednesday in Berlin after the award ceremony.

"I actually followed the original and actually noticed that this funny, this lightness that she brings is just something that is typical of Rabiye and actually gives me strength to get through the whole thing at all."

Berlin – It was important for everyone to show these two sides.

Kaptan was open to completely different roles.

"If something comes up that isn't funny at all: yes, I'd love to."

The 41-year-old actress, who lives in Cologne, received the festival's most important acting award.

In the film, she plays the mother of longtime Guantánamo prisoner Murat Kurnaz.

Director Andreas Dresen tells how his mother tries to free him from the US prison camp.

Author Laila Stieler also won a Silver Bear for the film's screenplay.

"I started out as a comedian, but before that I was an actress and I love making people laugh," Kaptan said.

"But I always had the feeling that I would also like to play these somewhat deeper things." She no longer wanted to remain just on the surface.

“I want to delve deeper, art as a whole is beautiful.

Life is not just funny, there are all facets.” She also wants to be able to show these facets.
