Ministers against Lieberman: "Surrender to officials and appeal to government" | Israel today

2022-02-16T21:37:20.846Z

Tensions are rising in the coalition following opposition by the Minister of Finance to further measures to fight the cost of the war • Senior Minister: "He surrenders to officials" • The full column tomorrow in "Israel This Week"

No one prepared Avigdor Lieberman for the Little Red Riding Hood prepared for him by his coalition friends.

The Minister of Finance was forced to sit for two and a half hours while he jumped into his chair in the Knesset's Economics Committee, and to listen to the representatives of the independents and the Knesset members make harsh accusations against him.

The committee's chairman, MK Michael Bitton, allowed all those present in the room, including the big blasphemers and scoundrels of the government's economic policy, to speak one after the other, without Lieberman having anywhere to run.

At the beginning of the hearing, he tried to evade, but Bitton made it clear to everyone that without his presence, the meeting would be closed immediately.

Senior government ministers have been saying in recent days about Lieberman that it is the sin of hubris and ego that is leading him, along with total surrender to finance officials.

They understand that his "do not change comma" policy from the economic program harms, first and foremost, the entire government, which over time turns out to be a colossal economic failure, both in the treatment of the cost of living and in the victims of the corona.

So far, the collective responsibility has compelled them to align with the finance minister and his whims, but public criticism and protests developing on the street, and bad cries in the media, have caused them to cut out of Lieberman and mark him as the main enemy.

Many things can be said about Lieberman, but he is not stupid.

He probably understands very well what his friends are doing to him.

He knows that Biton did not act on his own, and that the support Biton received in the public ambush against him did not amount to his party chairman Bnei Gantz, but also to other government partners: Prime Minister Bennett, who demanded changes in the outline for the self-employed, through Foreign Minister Lapid His party rebelled against Lieberman openly in the Finance Committee, and of course until Meretz and Labor, who said bluntly that the plan was unacceptable to them and that they intended to fight it. With Lieberman as a mercenary, he filled his mouth with water, apparently frightened by what was happening.

Mocking behind the scenes

Apparently Lieberman also understands that when the main news channels on television open editions with big headlines against him - it is not the hand of chance, but the hand of his friends who stirred the cauldron.

Not from the opposition, but from the government.

No wonder Lapid has been forced to issue a clarification that he is backing Lieberman completely, and he is doing so when his emissaries in the Knesset continue to openly crush his plan for the self-employed.

A senior government official said this week that if until a few weeks ago ministers, including the prime minister, honored Lieberman, who introduced himself as the most experienced and veteran minister in the government, could be trusted to emerge from any crisis and know how to steer things to the best side. Towards him he changed into utter contempt.

They can make bombastic statements about supporting him and cheer him on every stage, but behind the scenes mock him and brief him against him with all his might.

This feeling is not foreign to Lieberman.

The same feeling, that everyone turns their backs on him and stops believing in the image of the senior manager that he likes to adopt for himself.

The same thing happened when he was defense minister.

In his last days in office, he realized that the senior command in the defense establishment not only did not count him, but even laughed at him.

And so it was with the State Department.

Almost every day he would wake up in the morning to another headline of a "political factor" in his office against his policies.
