Damascus-SANA

The march of the Syrian theater did not begin with Maroun al-Naqqash and Abu Khalil al-Qabbani. Rather, its roots are deeply rooted in history since centuries BC.

(The theatrical movement in Syria) was the title of the lecture delivered by the playwright Samir Adnan al-Matrood in the Arab Writers Union, referring to the extension of the theatrical movement in our country to the days of the Phoenicians and Babylonians through religious rituals that were the nucleus of the first theater in the whole world.

Al-Matrod indicated that before the theater there were forms of recreation that met part of social life to play and dramatization through the storyteller and the shadow phantom, or as it is called in Damascus the Karakoz tent, pointing out that the theatrical movement was launched by Maroun Al-Naqash in Syria in the mid-nineteenth century.

The lecturer reviewed the history of the pioneering Arab theater, Abi Khalil Al-Qabbani, who was inspired by the idea of the shadow's imagination, then developed it to the theater, and then moved to Egypt after the anger of the clergy, and he considered theatrical work as a violation of religion.

The lecture was presented by the novelist and playwright Muhammad Al-Hafri, who referred to the importance of theater and its role in the cultural movement, pointing to the presence of theatrical movement today despite its decline due to the consequences of the terrorist war on our country, calling for work to restore its brilliance.
