(CNN) --

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro met Thursday with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, praising the far-right European leader as "a brother."

At a joint press conference in Budapest in which each praised the other for his conservative values, Bolsonaro referred to the prime minister as "dear Orbán" and said he considered him "a brother" because of "the affinity we have in defense of our people."

“I consider your country our little big brother.

Small if we take into account the differences in our respective territorial sizes, and big because of the values that we represent, which can be summed up in four words: God, country, family and freedom”, said the Brazilian president.

Brazil and Hungary signed agreements in the defense and military areas, Bolsonaro said at the press conference.

The Brazilian president again hinted that the Russian announcement of the withdrawal of part of its troops from the border with Ukraine was related to his meeting on Wednesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, a senior US official disputed the Russian announcement, saying on Wednesday that Moscow had added thousands of troops to the border in recent days.

“I told (Orbán) my feelings about this trip, due to the coincidence that we were still on the flight to Moscow when part of the Russian troops were demobilized at the border.

I take it, whether it's a coincidence or not, as a gesture that war really doesn't interest anyone,” he said.
