On Friday there were interim reports - after a difficult school year in the pandemic.

But grades are not everything.

What else do companies look for in applications?

District

– For many students who want to start an apprenticeship in the fall, the interim certificate is an important bargaining chip for the first job application.

They're still writing the final.

And of course the companies in the Ebersberg district want to know how their potential trainees are doing at school.

But if you have one or the other outlier in the "poison label" or can't show the best average grade overall, you don't need to despair.

Employers know that grades are not everything.

According to the interim certificates: Recruiting trainees is not a sure-fire success for companies

One reason is that recruiting trainees is not a sure-fire success.

"So far there have been very few applications," says Edith Herrmann from the Hohenlinden-based CNC turning technology company of the same name.

"Don't get nervous before the interim report," she said.

Because before that, many people could not get themselves up to apply.

And many tried the big companies like BMW or the airport.

"Not always easy for medium-sized companies," says Herrmann.

In general, the selection is “not that big”.

Does the rest ramp remain?

"Not at all," says the trainee recruiter.

"Those who drop out aren't the worst!" In a technical profession such as cutting machine operator, for which the Herrmann company takes on three trainees a year, presentation isn't everything.

With the "big ones", on the other hand, those who appear shy or bring a four in math could be kicked out.

"The decisive factor is the internship days," says Edith Herrmann.

The trainees get a feel for the job description and the working atmosphere - and the company gets an idea of whether someone is really interested in the job and shows the necessary approaches.

"They all mature over time," says the HR manager about her young professionals.

Incidentally, the company even sends its trainees to the schools in the district as “trainee scouts”.

Trainee representative: The certificate is by no means everything

Of course, the Herrmann company looks at the grades and comments on cooperation or homework discipline.

"But the certificate is by no means everything," says the trainee representative.

"We orientate ourselves on that," says Helmut Rappenglix about the interim report.

He is operations manager at Dr.

Mach, a medium-sized manufacturer of medical lights from Ebersberg.

"We have always found trainees," Rappenglix continues.

However, the number of applicants is already "a bit thin" - especially since the company wants to offer training as an industrial mechanic more frequently in the future - thanks to a new building in the Grafinger industrial park.

Personal qualifications and basic manual skills required

However, the company “doesn’t just focus on the first-class students”, but is primarily looking for young people who could imagine growing into the team and staying with it.

Small recruitment tests are about personal qualifications and basic manual skills.

Employment agencies and employers' associations regularly send press releases to the Ebersberger Zeitung, in which they draw attention to unfilled apprenticeship positions.

That will be the case again this year.

For students who are not too happy with their interim report, this means when applying for a job: If you really look, you will find something good.

Johann Schwaiger, district master craftsman, can only underline that.

Young people in the Ebersberg district who want to work in a trade can choose their apprenticeship company, says Grafinger, who has been involved in careers orientation for many years and helps schoolchildren to find the right job.

The supply of apprenticeships is enormous, and demand is increasing.

According to Schwaiger, this has to do with the corona pandemic.

The students had noticed that the trade was crisis-proof - in contrast to many other industries.

"Carpenters, joiners and metalworkers had enough to do even during the Corona crisis," says Schwaiger.
