Germany and Ukraine have played down US President Joe Biden's warnings of an imminent Russian military intervention in Ukraine.

In statements on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, German Foreign Minister Annalina Birbock told AFP not to "predict" Russia's intentions towards Ukraine, after the US President announced that he was convinced that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin had made the decision to "invade Ukraine".

Birbock said: "She does not share Washington's repeated warnings that Moscow will invade Ukraine at any moment," adding, "The worst thing that can be done in a crisis is to speculate or assume the decisions of the other side."

Birbock issued an urgent appeal to everyone to look closely at the facts on the ground, warning of the dangers of "targeted disinformation".

At the same time, Birbock affirmed the G7's support for Ukraine and its determination to respond to any violation of its sovereignty.

In a similar statement, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky contradicted Washington's warning expectations: "It is difficult for me to judge the American intelligence that prompted it to issue these warnings."
