Blue eyeshadow, the trend of the 2000s that is coming back to impress

2022-02-23T09:22:09.182Z

This flagship color of the 2000s is back on the scene. In eyeliner or smoky, professional makeup artists guide us to adopt it without blinking.

Nerdy, blue eyeshadow?

Reminiscent of our first teenage palettes, this retro color is taking its revenge in 2022. It is already attracting celebrities (from Jennifer Lopez to Dua Lipa via Gigi Hadid or Nicole Richie) and is making a name for itself on TikTok where the “blue eyeshadow looks” theme has accumulated more than 355 million views.

During the last New York Fashion Week, the azure eye shadow even dominated the

catwalk

of the fall-winter 2022 fashion shows (at LaQuan Smith and Christian Siriano in particular).

This vintage look has come a long way: it first emerged in the middle of the 1960s in pastel and creamy tones à la Twiggy.

It reached its peak at the end of the 1980s and until the beginning of the 2000s, in particular thanks to the pop icons of the time (such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera) who wore this famous pearly "

baby blue

" typical of the decade.

Then he disappears from the radar and sees his popularity rating drop.

"It was considered very kitsch then, it could give a somewhat 'cagolic' or old-fashioned look", explains Margaux Jalouzot, L'Oréal Paris make-up artist, who also notes that "for some time now, the trend has been more with much warmer and more natural colors on the eyes”.

Nostalgia

This unexpected

revival

is part of the global comeback of the make-up trends of the 2000s, both on the catwalks and on the red carpets.

“Nostalgia brings back colors and textures on the make-up side.

We need to review looks that we already know,” explains Margaux Jalouzot.

However, there is no question of having the

blues

: thanks to technological prowess, product formulas have improved significantly since the year 2000, giving way to materials that are more comfortable and easy to work with.

"It's great to be able to go back there by bringing a

twist

of modernity", enthuses the professional make-up artist Violette, founder of the eponymous cosmetics brand, specifying that blue is also the best-selling shade of her range of liquid eyeshadows.

In 2022, blue is mainly available in baby, navy, electric or azure shades.

The experts are unanimous: the finish must be absolutely shiny.

"To stay in the 90's

trend

, we opt for this very iridescent light blue, a little 'frosty' that we saw a lot at the time," advises Margaux Jalouzot.

These are also the finishes that highlight the face the most: “Metallic is still easier to wear because it really catches the light, so the result will never be dull.

There is a little less margin for error”, explains Violette.

In eyeliner or smoky

For daily make-up, experts advise adopting it in an eyeliner version, which is easier to apply and more affordable.

"We can take the risk of wearing this strong color in eyeliner, it will always be chic", assures Violette.

Her technique for applying it without missing a beat?

“With a brush, draw a line at the upper “eyelash line”.

Then, with your finger, blend the edge of the line on the mobile eyelid, without touching the tip in the outer corner which should remain more graphic.

This makes it possible to blur the entire length of the line which no longer needs to be perfectly precise.

To try a more daring look during an evening, make-up artists gladly recommend the blue smoky-eye.

"Above all, you have to apply a fixing base to the entire mobile eyelid with a brush or finger, so that it grips the blue pigment well," warns Margaux Jalouzot.

“Then, apply the blush with a flat brush.

Blend it with another clean, softer brush.”

The expert recommends applying make-up to the complexion after the eyes, because “the pigments will inevitably fall or run on the face before drying, so everything will have to be cleaned,” she specifies.

A harmonious make-up

As for the rest of the make-up, it is more discreet in order to avoid the flashy effect and leave the spotlight to the eyes: "The complexion must be impeccably even, all small redness must be covered" , advocates Margaux Jalouzot.

"The foundation and the corrector are essential to perfect this choice, because the blue brings out the bluish vessels of the dark circles", confirms Violette.

The pro trick to look good when such a cold color frames the look?

“The pink blush is essential to counterbalance the effect of the blue.

The combination of the two tones is magnificent, it gives a nice fresh complexion”, guarantees Violette.

Final touch: to fully play the card of the 2020s, Margaux Jalouzot suggests adding “transparent or slightly tinted” gloss to the lips.

Otherwise, a simple lip balm (colored or not) is enough.
