Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed, in a telephone conversation today, with his Iranian counterpart, Ebrahim Raisi, the developments of the situation on Ukraine.
“Putin briefed my president on developments in the situation around Ukraine in the context of the decision to conduct a special military operation to protect the civilian population of the Donbass republics in accordance with international law and obligations under the friendship and mutual assistance agreements with the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics,” the Kremlin agency quoted the Kremlin as saying in a statement.
For his part, the Iranian president expressed, according to the statement, his "understanding of Russia's security concerns due to destabilizing actions by the United States and NATO."
During the call, Raisi stressed to Putin that the expansion of NATO is a serious threat to the security and stability of independent countries in various regions, according to the Iranian "IRNA" agency.
Raisi referred to the ongoing nuclear negotiations in Vienna, indicating that providing a reliable guarantee to Iran and the real cancellation of the embargo measures against it are among the necessities of reaching a sustainable agreement.
The two sides also reviewed issues related to diplomatic efforts to preserve and fully implement the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action for the Iranian nuclear program, noting that reaching a final agreement contributes to maintaining regional stability and security.
The two sides stressed the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation in various fields, taking into consideration the results of the Russian-Iranian summit meeting hosted by Moscow last month.
