EL PAÍS data analyst, Kiko Llaneras, explains how the image verification groups work to check the veracity of the videos

The Internet is a place where anyone can post a fake video and pass it off as something it's not.

And that is also a part of the digital warfare of the 21st century.

Kiko Llaneras, data analyst for El País, explains in this video all the precautions that must be taken when images appear on any of our social networks.

“I think the first thing is to maintain a certain dose of skepticism.

Second, pay attention to what the source is, if there is an organization behind it, if there is a reputable journalist from a more or less well-known media outlet who certifies it as real.

Thirdly, it is important to go to the groups of professional verifiers who work analyzing these contents.

In the video that accompanies this text, Kiko Llaneras explains how specialized verification organizations work.

Are they independent or run by interest groups? How are they financed? Which are the most recommended?

Regarding the verification techniques they use, Llaneras explains that the first thing they do is extract all the information that is available in the video.

“For example, if a video appears on a social network and says that it was recorded on February 23 in Ukraine, the first thing to check is that this information is true.

Analyzing the video we can compare the images with satellite photos of those same coordinates.

Another important element is to compare the publication date with the date of the video metadata that is archived.

The most reputable verification groups have been gaining in credibility, although in this chain, Llaneras recalls that "the big media outlets are the best filter to filter out truthful information."
