The war in Ukraine moves people.

A spontaneous donation campaign in Peiting now shows how much.

Within hours, she unleashed a huge wave of helpfulness.

Peiting – It moves you to tears what can be read in elementary school script on a piece of paper hanging on a children's backpack: "Halo children.

I have a package with painting materials for you and I hope that the war will be gone soon.” The rucksack was handed in in the hall of the Peitinger Saliterhof – a spontaneous aid campaign for the refugees from the Ukraine triggered a wave of willingness to donate.

That they would be overrun by helpful citizens: Saliterhof boss Bärbel Schlamp and her husband Thomas Lein did not expect that.

It all started very small: Saliterhof employee Edyta comes from Poland.

Her son still lives there today, in the border area with Ukraine.

Every day he reports on mothers, children and older men who are stranded there, carrying nothing more than a suitcase.

The idea: collect a little, Edyta's friend drives the donations to Poland in a van.

Aid goods are delivered in crates

The sight in the hall of the Saliterhof yesterday, Monday, quickly suggests that if this continues unabated, then a rethinking of trucks will have to take place.

Warm duvets are packed in bags.

Diapers pile up in boxes.

Many have already thought practically, bagged everything in large bags or packed it in boxes and also labeled it right away - preferably in English.

Winter clothing, shoes, blankets, towels, hygiene items: everything is needed.

In fact, there are some who deliver relief supplies and go straight to the shops to get additional hygiene items.

When Bärbel Schlamp made the relief campaign public on Saturday, the phone didn't ring.

"We received inquiries on all channels, it started like an avalanche." Everyone who donates something here at the Saliterhof-Stadel has one thing in common: "People just think the situation is terrible," says Schlamp.

So did Annemarie Fallschissel from Peiting, who spent a whole morning looking for everything that could be spared.

The elderly woman also carefully stacked and packed new clothes.

"My husband is from Transylvania, so up to now we have always given everything to Romania." The elderly woman is visibly affected by the fate of the Ukrainians.

"These pictures of the children." The 73-year-old has tears in her eyes when she talks about it and about the men,

It is not yet clear when and how the transport will find its way to the Ukrainian border.

One thing is certain: It should go faster than initially planned, on March 13th.

Mayor Peter Ostenrieder has intervened as an intermediary for a possible truck transport.

He also organizes boxes to make packing the relief supplies easier.

"Following an inquiry about accommodation, a few people from Peiting have already got in touch who would make a room or an entire holiday apartment available to refugees." Peiting helps.

Municipality has set up a donation account

As with the flood disaster, the municipality of Peiting has set up a donation account for the Ukraine refugees.

The municipality accepts monetary donations under the purpose “Help Ukraine”.
