The Pentagon announced today the opening of a direct line to communicate with the Russian Ministry of Defense to prevent military accidents in Ukraine.
Sputnik news agency quoted a Pentagon official as saying that the US Department of Defense "established a direct line of communication with its Russian counterpart on March 1, in order to avoid miscalculations, military accidents and escalation."
The US official indicated that "the United States maintains a number of communication channels with Russia to discuss the most important security issues in the event of an emergency."
The White House had ruled out establishing a no-fly zone over Ukraine, noting that this would lead to war with Russia, which Washington does not want.
