A medical team in the General Authority of Damascus Hospital “Al-Mujtahid” performed laparoscopic surgery directed by the navigation method to remove a fungal ball isolated in the frontal sinus of a patient in his forties, which is a rare case globally, according to its supervisor, Dr. Razan Al-Jassem.
The head of the ear division in the hospital, Dr. Al-Jassem, explained in a statement to SANA that the formation of a fungus ball in the patient’s frontal sinus is a rare occurrence around the world, as only 20 similar cases have been documented. It is an infection that occurs as a result of a type of mold “fungus”, also called a tumor or aspergillosis.
Regarding the details of the case, Dr. Al-Jassem stated that the patient visited the isolation emergency department in the hospital with a complaint of frontal headache, edema, eyelid drooping with diplopia, determined by left eye movements, numbness and numbness in the roof of the palate. The left frontal sinus.
Dr. Al-Jassem indicated that in the first stage, the sinuses were cleaned under local anesthesia and biopsies were taken for histopathology, and the result was a fungal mycosis. In the second stage, the left upper jaw was removed, and then an endoscopic sinus surgery was performed. A metal alignment with an isolated fungal ball, which necessitated a navigation-guided endoscopic sinus surgery to overlap the left frontal sinus and extirpate the fungal ball, and then discharge the patient in a good condition.
And the “navigation” technique is only available in Damascus Hospital, according to Al-Jassem, and it was used because the placement of the ball is critical, as it helps with GPS and image transmission to remove diseased tissue accurately while avoiding hitting critical areas.
