The rush was enormous: the benefit waffle baking by Moosburg student Marie resulted in plenty of donations for the Ukraine - and caused a stir nationwide.

Moosburg

- A complete success and a great act of solidarity: This is how to summarize what happened on Friday at the Moosburg Mühlbachbogen.

As reported, a few days ago Marie Gmeinwieser (8) considered how she could alleviate the suffering of the Ukrainians.

And then came up with the idea of starting a charity waffle sale on the doorstep.

What she and her family did not suspect: Word of the campaign not only got around in Moosburg, but also jumped from the flyers distributed in mailboxes to social networks, where the story went viral and aroused interest from the media nationwide.

The highlight for Marie was probably a post about her in the children's news program on ZDF "logo!" on Thursday.

The second-grader watches it regularly herself – it was there that she became aware of the war in Ukraine.

"The editors of ZDFtivi as well as Radio Bayern3 and Antenne Bayern also contacted us to report on Marie's plans," said mother Nadine Gmeinwieser on Friday afternoon, beaming with joy and visibly proud of her child.

Meanwhile, she and her husband, Klaus, fired up the five waffle irons and carried the bowls of batter to the makeshift baking station on their porch, which was hung with a large Pace peace flag.

"We were amazed at the waves it made," said the 40-year-old.

"We just wanted to do a little waffle campaign."

By selling waffles: schoolgirl collects 2100 euros for Ukraine

The Gmeinwiesers probably struck a chord with many people: minutes after the start of sales at 12.30 p.m., a long line formed in front of the garden fence, and some had even wisely brought a folding chair with them for the waiting time.

The very first buyer was Hildegard Barth.

"An excellent thing," praised the 75-year-old from Moosburg, while Marie knocked powdered sugar onto the steaming waffle.

The senior citizen said that the news of the war affected her very much.

Instead of the estimated one euro, Barth gave a twenty for the donation box.

And it filled up quickly.

Around 1 p.m., two police officers got out of their patrol car with plates and, after a short wait, exchanged a banknote for a waffle.

Even Mayor Josef Dollinger scurried by to support the campaign.

Relatives of the Gmeinwiesers even came from Karlsruhe.

And the local grandparents had also baked sheet cakes to promote Marie's street sales.

In the afternoon, when around 420 waffles were handed over the fence and the bowls of dough scraped empty, the Gmeinwiesers' first count was over 2,100 euros.

Everything should now flow to the "Aktion Deutschland Hilft".
