The head of the secret service in Russia is reaping malice on the Internet for his biting comments about the West: he is said to act “like a parrot”.

Moscow – The head of the foreign intelligence service in Russia*, Sergey Naryshkin, sees his country unfairly boycotted by the West because of the war in Ukraine.

"This is an attempt to destroy our government," Washington Post reporter Paul Sonne quoted Naryshkin as saying.

Russia is the victim of the western "cancel culture", an English term that has its origins in politics.

In German it can be literally translated as “annulling culture”.

However, the Anglicism Cancel Culture is more common in German.

Cancel culture is a community's effort to exclude from a system a person or organization that violates the community's values.

In this case, it is Russia and above all Vladimir Putin*, who violates the values of the democratic West with his war of aggression in Ukraine*.

The term has quite negative connotations and is often used in the vocabulary of politically more right-wing, conservative groups in order to differentiate themselves from politically left-oriented groups.

Vladimir Putin: Kremlin secret service chief sees Russia wrongly sanctioned

Naryshkin's use of the term cancel culture in the Ukraine conflict* therefore aptly reflects Russia's political position towards the democratic West.

It perpetuates the narrative of Russia as a victim of the West and serves pro-Russian propaganda.

Washington Post reporter Paul Sonne further quotes Naryshkin: “The masks have fallen.

The West is not just trying to seal off Russia behind a new iron curtain.

This is an attempt to destroy our government - to 'cancel' it, as it is called in 'tolerant' liberal-fascist circles.”

Russia curries favor with Western conservatives: 'Don't fall for it'

Sonne published Naryshkin's comments via Twitter.

The social network reacted promptly: US citizens saw clear parallels in the choice of words by both Naryshkin and the politically right-wing Republicans* of the USA*.

"Amazing that their choice of words is indistinguishable from that of the American right," reads one reaction.

Another put it that Russian propaganda "mimicked American propaganda like a parrot."

Another user wrote: "This is a deliberate attempt to please western conservatives.

You've done this before.

Don't fall for it.” (na)
