The Polish secret service has arrested a suspected Russian spy near the border with Ukraine.

The ABW secret service announced on Friday that it was a Spanish citizen of Russian origin who is said to have worked for the Russian military service GRU.

The man was arrested in Przemysl near the Polish-Ukrainian border on the night of February 28 after the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine.

He had previously been in the region for a few days.

According to the information, he is said to have had accreditation as a journalist and to have obtained information "whose use by Russian secret services could have a negative impact on Poland's internal and external security and defense capability," it said.

The man had planned to travel to Ukraine to continue his agent work there.

The public prosecutor's office is investigating activities for a foreign secret service to the detriment of Poland.

If convicted, the alleged agent faces up to ten years in prison.

According to the Polish border guard, 672,500 refugees from the neighboring country have arrived in Poland since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.

Many trains from Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities arrive in the eastern Polish city of Przemysl.
