(CNN) --

The global death toll from COVID-19 surpassed 6 million on Monday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Global daily deaths have fallen rapidly over the past month, from about 11,000 a day in the second week of February to about 7,000 a day today, one of the lowest rates recorded in the last year.

But the loss remains immense, with close to a million deaths recorded in the last four months.

Around 1 in 1,300 people globally has died from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic, and experts say the official death count is likely to be understated.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tweeted on Sunday that it is "too early to declare victory" over Covid-19.

"Many countries are facing high rates of hospitalization and death. With transmission high, the threat of a new, more dangerous variant remains real. We urge all people to exercise caution and all governments to stand firm," he said.

Along with the US, Brazil, Russia and Mexico have reported the highest number of Covid-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization noted in its weekly epidemiological update that deaths were declining in most world regions, but were rising in the Western Pacific and Eastern Mediterranean compared to the previous week.

The Western Pacific region has also seen an increase in cases in the past week.

To date, there have been 446 million cases of Covid-19 worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University.

These symptoms of covid-19 raise new questions

About 57% of the world's population, that is more than 4.4 billion people, is fully vaccinated with the initial vaccination regimen, according to Our World in Data.

But this varies greatly from country to country.

Less than 14% of people in low-income countries have received at least one dose of the covid-19 vaccine.
