Within the framework of Syria's participation in the work of the second Baghdad International Water Conference, the Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Tammam Raad, head of the Syrian delegation to the conference, was briefed on the Iraqi experience in the field of irrigation.
Minister Raad stressed, during a briefing tour of the historic Indian-Iraqi Dam, accompanied by Iraqi Minister of Water Resources Mahdi Al-Hamdani and a number of delegations participating in the conference, the need to strengthen cooperation between Syria and Iraq in the field of irrigation and water to crystallize unified positions and visions with the aim of obtaining water rights.
Minister Raad noted the Iraqi irrigation experience and its future projects by converting irrigation projects from open irrigation to closed irrigation.
For his part, the Iraqi minister explained that the visit to the Al-Hindiya Dam comes with the aim of learning about the history of irrigation in Iraq, stressing that the Al-Hindiya Dam, which was erected in 1913, reflects the history of Iraq in the field of irrigation and the regulation of water distribution at that time.
Al-Hamdani pointed out that his country's government was able to include the old Hindiya dam in the province of Babylon and the Nawa'ir Hit in the Anbar province on the list of the World Heritage for Irrigation.
And launched in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, last Saturday, the work of the second Baghdad International Water Conference under the slogan "Water and Climate Change", with the participation of a delegation from Syria and delegations from several Arab and foreign countries and organizations.
